For the last three years I have been on a quest to ditch as many conventional products in my home and replace them with safer, natural options. But they must meet certain criteria: they have to work at least as good as their conventional counterparts, they must be convenient and they cannot cost an arm and a leg. One of the toughest switches was my deodorant. For the longest time I could not find any natural deodorant that actually worked.
Why Ditch Conventional Deodorant?
Normal deodorant contains several ingredients that might be harmful to your health.
Aluminum: More evidence continues to show a possible link to cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease.
Parabens: are a known hormone disrupter.
Phthalates: Are an endocrine disrupter, it’s found in plastic and may be linked to breast cancer.
Formaldehyde: This is a carcinogen.
Fragrance: This is usually code for all kinds of chemicals that do not necessarily need to be disclosed.
Propylene Glycol: The regular name for this? Antifreeze. Yeah.
One of the defenses is that in small amounts, none of these are supposedly found to do too much damage to the body. But how about applying them 1 – 2 times a day, everyday for 50 years? Not to mention we rub them over our armpits, right over our lymph nodes. So if we can find a natural alternative that actually works then why not ditch this stuff?
What I’ve Tried
I first began by visiting my local health store and buying a couple of products. I couldn’t even make it to lunch without smelling! Over time I tried every single option they had and NOTHING worked. Inevitably I would need to pull out my regular deodorant just so I wouldn’t be embarrassed.
Next I tried making my own. I read great testimonies about using coconut oil and purification oil. Umm… no. My armpits felt greasy and they still ended up smelling during the day. So I began adding baking soda to the concoction. While it did work, I found myself needing to constantly tweak the recipe depending on how dry my armpits were. Plus, I usually had to reapply several times a day. So I switched the baking soda to arrowroot powder. I liked that better… I had less irritation but I still had to apply a few times a day.
I finally decided to try the deodorant from Young Living. The price ($11 wholesale) had kept me away but when I really thought about… it didn’t seem that bad when I only bought deodorant once every couple of months. I personally much prefer the Mountain Mint over the Aroma Mist… it just worked better for me. At first I had to reapply twice but my body seemed to adjust after a couple of weeks and I only needed to use it once a day. I’ve stuck with this deodorant for over a year now and I am still extremely pleased with it! I even got my husband to switch!
Why I Had To Switch Again – I’m Having a Baby!
I will be giving birth to my third baby in just a few weeks! Unfortunately that means I had to switch to a new deodorant recently. Did you know that Peppermint essential oil is amazing to help dry up your milk supply? That’s awesome when I am weaning but not so great when I am about to have a baby! I don’t need anything interfering with my milk coming in (or affecting the supply while I am breastfeeding). So as a precaution, I stopped using the Mountain Mint deodorant a couple of weeks ago.
*Some people my not have any problems continuing to use the deodorant but in my experience peppermint has caused my milk supply to drop by half.
I wasn’t interested in making my own again or going through product after product just to be disappointed. A couple of friends had raved about a new company called Schmidt’s Deodorant so I gave them a try… but to be honest, it’s so hard to find natural deodorant that actually works, I was pretty skeptical.
I am not a fan of “flowery scents” so I bought the Cedarwood + Juniper in a jar (I didn’t get the stick).
I love it.
It smells kind of manly but still wearable for ladies. It’s easy to apply and the most important feature is that it works! I might even like it better than the Mountain Mint from Young Living but only time will tell. I’ve used it for two weeks now and I have absolutely no funk. And I am pregnant so………. let’s just say deodorant has to work a bit harder for me right now!
They have other scents that I am eager to try too:
and they have Fragrance Free too.
The cost straight from the company is $8.99, and about the same if you buy them from Amazon. So not bad! And the jar will last a while… a little goes a long way.
One more thing… if you are still using conventional deodorant but are ready to make the switch, you might want to try a detox for your armpits. It sounds weird but if you are having any problems with natural versions then this might be exactly what you need! You can find a great detox recipe here.
So if you are looking for a natural deodorant that actually works then I would highly recommend trying Schmidt’s!
Have you found any natural deodorant that works just as well or better than regular deodorant?
