A friend of mine shared on Facebook a few weeks ago a recipe for homemade dishwasher tabs. She said she loves them, they work and have been saving her money.
I liked the sound of that!
Everything here in Turks and Caicos is sooooo expensive because it all has to be imported in (and then taxes and duties, etc). So, if I can make it myself, then I’ll do it… but only if it’s EASY and actually WORKS.
I love using Lemon essential oil and Thieves Cleaner around my house for various things… I knew adding them to the dishwasher tabs would kick up their cleaning power!
I couldn’t believe how well they worked!
Homemade Dishwasher Tab Recipe:
1 cup of Borax
1 cup of Washing Soda
About 1/2 cap full of Thieves Cleaner
10 drops of Lemon essential oil
Almost 1 cup of Vinegar
Mix the Borax and Washing Soda together in a large bowl. In a liquid measuring cup add Thieves Cleaner and Lemon essential oil. Add vinegar until you have 1 cup of liquid. Add the liquid mixture into the dry mix and whisk together… it will foam! (And it will smell oh so good!) Pour into ice cube trays and let them sit out for about two hours. I usually put them in the fridge to speed up the process… and I store them in there too since it’s so hot in our house. (They may not melt, I’m too nervous to find out!)
It helps if the bowl you are using has a spout, so you can pour easily.
If you are worried about the tabs fitting in your dishwasher then simply don’t fill the trays up to the top.
The solution will settle, so you need to whisk it every so often when you are filling the trays. If it isn’t mixed well then the tabs will not solidify.
I could not find Washing Soda here but it should be available in the States. If you can’t find in then you can make your own by baking Baking Soda! I used this recipe here and it worked like a charm!
This recipe makes about 12 – 18 tabs depending on the size of your ice cube trays.
I was nervous about the dishes having a “layer” on them but they all came out nice, clean and smooth! I’m on my third batch now!
